Avid Technology, Inc. announced the next-generation of its high-performance storage disk arrays – Avid VideoRAID ST and Avid VideoRAID SR solutions – which combine real-time performance, cost-effective SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) drive technology, and the security of fail-safe data protection in the event of a disk drive failure. Unlike other RAID solutions that may be unusable during a drive rebuild, Avid VideoRAID solutions help customers keep up with the fast pace of digital content creation by maintaining full performance and data protection, while rebuilding the drives in the background. Customers will also be able to take advantage of real-time playback of up to two streams of uncompressed HD on as few as eight Avid VideoRAID drives. Additionally, Avid is offering all new VideoRAID ST and SR customers a three year warranty on drive mechanisms and enclosures, providing advanced exchange of replacements parts at no additional cost.

Avid makes editing footage captured with a Panasonic P2 camera fast and easy. Avid systems use the same native MXF file format as Panasonic P2 memory cards, so there’s no transcoding, digitizing or file conversion process of any kind. You can edit directly from the P2 card or from a drive. Nothing could be simpler - or more immediate.
Video Quick Tours:
Working with P2: Using the Panasonic HVX200 camera and Avid Media Composer
Native DVCPRO HD capture and editing – Start editing right away without any transcoding, digitizing, or file conversion delays.
Real-time pull-down – Real-time support for both normal and advanced pull-down eliminates time consuming intermediate steps.
Open timeline – P2 formats can be mixed in real time in the same timeline with SD or HD media that uses the same time base.
Native MXF support – Import metadata automatically into the Avid bin for fast access and trouble-free media management.
Auto import of P2 metadata – Information such as Journalist Name, Production Number, Scene Number, Take Number and Project Name all appear automatically in the Avid bin.
Variable frame rate support – Take advantage of Panasonic’s wide range of frame rates and get beautiful slow motion effects without having to render.
Details
The following Avid editing systems support Panasonic P2 workflows: Avid Media Composer family, Avid NewsCutter family and Avid Xpress Pro software. Selected P2 workflows are supported by Avid DS Nitris and Avid Symphony Nitris systems.
Avid’s focus on open solutions across our entire product range enables fast, easy interchange of media and compositional information.
You can work with P2 media and Avid editing products whether on a laptop or workstation, Mac or PC.
P2 material can be delivered from production to editorial either via P2 cards or you can backup your P2 cards on a drive (USB/FireWire hard drives or DVD).
Avid editing systems provide fast and flexible accessing, reviewing and editing of P2 originated material regardless of how it is delivered to the edit bay.
Avid offers you several choices for delivering your finished product. You can export directly from a timeline containing P2-compatible media and write back to a P2 card, export to a DVCPRO HD VTR via FireWire; or export an alternative file type for Web, DVD or multimedia delivery.
Avid allows you to quickly transcode from the timeline for output via HD-SDI to a VTR such as D5 or HDCAM, or via SDI and analogue component or composite, to a VTR such as DVCPRO or Digital Betacam. You can also playback “direct to air” from the Avid for immediate turn around.
Panasonic P2 media offers you incredible flexibility in your acquisition, editing and archiving workflow.
Changing a User Setting to a Site Setting
To change a User Setting to a Site Setting, first look at your project window and scroll to the right to determine if the setting you want to change is a User Setting or a Site Setting. Then go to the Special menu at the top of the interface and select Site Settings. Highlight and drag the setting you want to change from the setting palette to the Site Settings window. It is now a site setting that will remain consistent regardless of who logs into that Avid software. There are only three Avid specific QuickTime codecs which support alpha encoding in third party applications like Adobe After Effects.

Supported Avid Codecs for Quicktime Movies with Alpha
There are only three Avid specific QuickTime codecs which support alpha encoding in third party applications like Adobe After Effects.
One is the "Meridien JFIF" Quicktime codec, another is the "Meridien Uncompressed" Quicktime codec, and the third is the DNxHD Quicktime codec. No other Avid specific codec supports an alpha encoded channel.
Specifically, other Avid codecs like "Avid MPEG2 50Mbit" will allow you to proceed in a program like Adobe After Effects, but the Avid application will ignore the alpha channel/high-contrast matte.
Sequence out of sync when outputting to a DV device.
When you are outputting to a DV device, you may see a delay between what you see and hear in your computer and what you see and hear in your DV device – particularly when you have a client monitor attached to your DV device. This is because the DV device has to process all of the information that your system is sending out to it, and this may take a little more time than your system needs to process the same information.
To fix this delay, select your Video Display Settings from the Video Quality menu. Under Desktop Delay, you can select the number of frames the Avid will delay playback on your computer monitor in order to match up to the playback displayed on your DV device. Usually a setting of 15 frames or ½ of a second will be enough to sync up the two displays, but you may need to experiment with this a little to get it just right.
Exception: DISK_ACCESS_DENIED Occurs: On scanning the OMFI folder or opening or saving a bin or project.
The error Exception: DISK_ACCESS_DENIED indicates that the file that Avid is trying to access does not have the proper permissions settings.
The first step is to check that the Simple File Sharing setting is not turned on. This sets special permissions on files and causes access problems for Avid. To check this setting:
1. Double-click My Computer. From the Tools menu, select Folder Options...
2. Click the View Tab and in the Advanced Settings window, scroll to the last option Use Simple File Sharing. If this is checked, uncheck it and click OK.
3. Incorrect file permissions will still need to be corrected. Right-click the folder that does not have the proper permissions and select Properties.
4. From the Security Tab click Add...
5. In the Select Users window, type Everyone and then click Check Names and click OK.
6. Finally, in the Folder Properties window, select Everyone, check Full Control in the Permissions window and click OK.
